PET-related software applications include encryption, cryptography, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), Platform for Privacy Preference Project (P3P), Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), and digital signatures and certificates, just to name a few. PETs also include hardware appliances like firewalls, smart cards and key fobs or biometric devices like fingerprint readers, voice recognition, and retinal / iris scanners.
